Choosing a Cassette

Cassette Speeds and Sizes:

Cassettes come in different speeds (7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12). The speeds is how many gears there are on the cassette.

Cassettes also come in different sizes (11-28T, 11-32T, 11-34T etc.). The first number refers to how many teeth are on the smallest gear, and the second number refers to how many teeth are on the largest gear.

Now that you know this, you can go ahead and check the speeds and size of the cassette on your bike.

Counting Speeds:

Count how many gears are on the back wheel of your bike. The number of gears there are is how many speeds your cassette is.

In this example, the bike has 10 gears on the back wheel. This means it is a 10 speed cassette.

Checking the Size:

Count how many teeth are on the smallest and largest gear. Removing the wheel from the bike can make this a little easier.

In this example, the cassette has 11 teeth on the smallest gear and 32 on the largest, making the size 11-32T.

Now that you know how many speeds and what size cassette you need, you can head over to our cassette section and purchase the appropriate cassette to go with your trainer!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do the speeds and size of the cassette really matter?

A: Yes! It matters a lot! When getting a cassette for you trainer you should match it exactly to what is already on your bike. If that's not possible, then going one size smaller in cassette is fine as long as the speeds are still the same. The speeds HAVE to match or your gears will not work!

Q: We plan on using two bikes back and forth on one trainer but each bike has a different number of speeds. Will one cassette work for both bikes?

A: No, there is no one cassette that will work for bikes of different speeds. In this case, you will need to get two cassettes and swap them on the trainer every time you swap the bikes.
